Ruth Jacoby Gang, age 77 years, of Stockton, NJ (Delaware Township) died Monday, March 8, 2004 in the Hunterdon Medical Center, Raritan Township, NJ.
Born in South Orange, NJ, October 30, 1927, daughter of the late Harry and Sylvia Leon Jacoby, she had resided in Montclair, NJ and Shelter Island, NY for twenty-five years before moving to Delaware Township twenty years ago.
A graduate of Columbia High School (1943) and Wellesley College (1947), she was an active community volunteer, organizing and fundraising for the Montclair League of Women Voters; The Whole Theatre Company of Montclair; The Prallsville Mills, Stockton, NJ, the Hunterdon Land Trust Alliance, and Hunterdon Youth Services.
Surviving are her husband of fifty-three years, Lloyd Gang; a son, Stephen of Manchester, MA; two daughters, Meredith Bergmann of New York City, NY and Laura Gang of Roslindale, MA; and seven grandchildren. She was boundlessly proud of the achievements of her offspring in the arts, government, business and in their communities. She was also the mistress of five generations of German Shorthaired Pointers.
Ruth remained energetic and youthful in her outlook, maintaining her community volunteering and a wide circle of friends. Despite increasing infirmities over the past month, she had spent time in Sanibel Island with her family and traveled to Amherst, Massachusetts to see the premiere of granddaughter Melissa's opera. Last fall, she was thrilled and proud to attend the dedication of daughter Meredith's permanent sculpture for the Boston Women's Memorial on Commonwealth Avenue in Back Bay. Ruth assiduously publicized news of her grandchildren's latest accomplishments whether scholastic, athletic, artistic, religious, scouting, or otherwise. She was an extraordinary story-collector and story-teller.
