A. George Gazonas, age 93, died Wednesday, May 15, 2019 at his home in Delaware Township NJ.
Born June 14, 1925 in Norristown PA, George was the son of the late George A. and Georgia Gazonas. As a boy he was a sea scout, and later served his country in the United States Navy during World War II as a radioman 1st class and Morse code translator.
After the War, George received his Bachelor’s degree from Ursinus College and his Master’s degree from Clark University. He was a history teacher for many years, first in Vineland NJ and eventually at Hunterdon Central Regional High School where he retired as the Chairman of the History Department. While at Hunterdon Central, he also served as the assistant football coach.
George had many loves in his life, many of which centered around his family. He and his wife of 65 years, Dorothy Angelica Flevaris, travelled extensively throughout the United States, often at gatherings for the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW), and annual trips to Greece to visit with family and friends.
If George wasn’t playing one of his favorite games, backgammon, with Uncle Dino and others, he was busy at being an unbeatable checkers player, playing chess, bridge, hearts or pinochle with his many friends. He loved reading. He would read nearly anything he could, from history or fiction novels, to newspapers and periodicals, as he was an avid reader. On a weekly basis, he solved the NYT crossword and acrostic puzzles with his own puzzle constructions, many of which, remain unsolved. For many years, he was a frequent volunteer at the Flemington Fairgrounds where he made all sorts of sausage and steak sandwiches, smothered with peppers, onions, and other toppings.
George was predeceased by his brother, Alexander Gazonas and his daughter, Nike Dionysia Gazonas in 2017. He is survived by his wife, Dorothy Angelica Gazonas, a son and daughter-in-law, George Aristotle and Demitra of Bel Air, MD, his four grandchildren, Aristotle and Dimitris Gazonas, and Andreas and Katerina Constantinou, his sister, Catherine Zarcone, his sister-in-law, Anastasia “Grace” Michalakeas, as well as nieces and nephews.
