Andrew J. Toth Jr., Pearl Harbor survivor

FRANKLIN TOWNSHIP -- Andrew J. Toth Jr., 86, of Franklin Township, Hunterdon County, died Saturday (May 5, 2001) in the Hunterdon Medical Center in Raritan Township.

Born in Perth Amboy, Jan. 12, 1915, son of the late Andrew and Margaret Meglici Toth, he had lived in Franklin Township for more than 75 years.

An accomplished auto mechanic for more than 50 years, he was employed by Ditschman Lincoln-Mercury-Ford, Raritan Township until retiring at the age of 80 in 1995. His advice was widely sought on repairs and restoration of vintage Ford automobiles.

A Pearl Harbor survivor of World War II, he was a sergeant with Battery A, 98th Coast Artillery, U.S. Army serving at Pearl Harbor and other locations in the Pacific Theater of Operations. He was awarded the N.J. Distinguished Service Award; the Congressional Pearl Harbor Medal and the Asiatic-Pacific Ribbon with two stars.

An avid hunter, "Sarge" was well-known for his community involvement. He was a member of V.F.W. Post 7866 of Flemington; American Legion Post No. 113 of Frenchtown; N.J. Chapter 2 of Pearl Harbor Survivors; the Quakertown Fire Company and was a founding member of the Quakertown Recreation Club.

Three brothers, John, Louis and George Toth, and a sister, Mary Toth, predeceased him.

Surviving are his wife, Victoria Delikat Toth; a daughter, Patricia Skowronski of Hamilton Square; a son, Paul Toth of Cypress, Calif.; five sisters, Helen Heckman of Riegelsville, Margaret Laubach of Milford, Betty Lippincott of Upper Black Eddy, Pa., Catherine Wilson of Stewartswille, and Theresa Fillebrown of Albany, N.Y.; and three grandchildren.

A funeral liturgy will be 10 a.m. Tuesday a St. Magdalen Church, 105 Mine St., Flemington. Interment will be in St. Magdalen Cemetery, Flemington.

Calling hours will be from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Monday at Holcombe-Fisher Funeral Home, 147 Main St., Flemington. Memorial contributions may be made to Pearl Harbor Survivors Association, Chapter 2, c/o Marion Emmons, 144 Seventh St., Cresskill, NY 07626.
