Anna Dobozynski (90) passed peacefully from this life on New Year’s Day, 2021 at the Hunterdon Care Center. Raised Anna Christopher on a farm near Whitehouse, she married Walter Dobozynski upon graduating high school in 1949, and moved just down the road to partner with her husband in raising four children on their dairy farm. In addition to meeting the demands of farming and bringing up children, they were active members in the Dairyman’s League Cooperative Association, including showcasing the farm by hosting one of the annual Businessman’s Picnic. The Dobozynski farm became widely known as a source of farm fresh eggs, purchased on the honor system by a steady stream of area residents. And the many friends who came to visit, chip in with field work, and partake in Anna’s home cooking, gave the farm a lively social life of its own for many years.
By the early 1960s Anna had found time in her busy life to serve with the US Postal Service, first as a substitute rural carrier, then a full-time rural carrier, a job she performed until retirement from farming in 1995. The state purchased the larger section of the Dobozynski farm on Rte. 523 for the New Jersey Farmland Preservation Program, land that is now the Readington River Buffalo Farm. Readington Township acquired the other section, acreage that became and remains the Dobozynski Farm Park.
From 1999, Anna lived on Stanton Road, close to the farm to which she had devoted her adult life. Not yet ready for full retirement, she was hired by Flemington Floral Company, calling on her extensive knowledge of the local road system to deliver flowers. She still made time to tend her own ample flower and vegetable gardens, continuing a passion dating from her days on the farm. She also kept up the tradition of raising chickens–though not the 1200 birds they had on the farm–by having a small coop of laying hens to supply choice eggs to family and friends.
Anna was a lifelong member of Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic church in Whitehouse Station. She was a volunteer and active member of the Polish American Citizens Club in Whitehouse Station, and served with the Readington Township Board of Elections.
Anna led an active social life. For many decades she volunteered with the Stanton Reformed Church Holly Trail Fund Raiser, and she was active with the Readington Township Senior Citizens Club. Anna very much enjoyed joining friends and neighbors on Dine and Chat outings, attending theater and in putting their heads together in an investment club. But as a loving wife, mother and grandmother, her children, grandchildren and family always came first in Anna’s busy life.
Anna was predeceased by her husband, Walter, her daughter, Dianne, and her brothers William and Stanley Christopher, and is survived by her brother John Christopher, her sons, Walter (Joe) Jr. and George with his wife, Barbara, her daughter Linda Pettie with her husband, George, and by her five grandchildren, Keelin Sullivan, Rita, Sarah, Mason and Jack Dobozynski.
A visitation will take place on Thursday, January 7, 2021 from 4:00-7:00pm in the Holcombe-Fisher Funeral Home, 147 Main Street, Flemington, NJ. The following day on Friday, January 8, 2021 there will be a funeral mass at 9:30am at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church, 390 Country Road, Rte. 523, Whitehouse Station, NJ 08889, with burial to follow immediately at Saint Bernard Cemetery, 500 US –28, Bridgewater Township, NJ, 08807.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The Polish American Citizens Club, P.O. Box 314, Whitehouse Station, NJ, 08889.
