Audrey Gomes, age 78, died Saturday, December 13, 2014, surrounded by her family.
Born in Salford, England on June 24, 1936, Audrey was the daughter of the late John and Ethel Cullen. She immigrated to the United States with her family in 1971, living in Emerson and Bedminster, NJ, before moving to Flemington.
Audrey’s entire life was encompassed by hard work and diligence. In 1981, Audrey and her late husband, Joseph, opened La Petit Chateau, a first class French restaurant, which gained its reputation and tremendous success due to Audrey’s perseverance and hard work. After 22 years, Audrey and Joseph sold the business to retire.
Audrey was an exceptionally loving person who made everyone in her life feel special. Those who were privileged enough to know her were graced by her caring, gentle, understanding ways. Audrey was generous in both words and deeds and always found time to listen and help those in need. She had an infectious laugh and a great sense of humor that brightened up our days.
Audrey was a truly vital part of her community. Her vast interests included enjoying time at the library book club, doing Tai Chi, and engaging in activities with her friends from Walnut Brook.
Her husband, Joseph Gomes, died in 2002. Audrey is survived by her three daughters, Josette Gomes of Flemington, NJ, Joanna Plues and her husband Steve, of Payson, AZ, Jacqui Driscoll and her husband, Brian, of New Milford, NJ, her eight grandchildren, Brian, Brett, Gabrielle, and Brandon Driscoll, Sierra Audrey Gomes, Kendra Hartnett, Jordan Ross, and Steven Plues, her four great grandchildren, Adrian, Abigail, Jonas and Jamie, her sister Anne Frain and her niece, Claire Pendlebury of England.
A Mass of Christian burial will be at 10:30 am, Friday, December 19, 2014, at St. Magdalen Church, 105 Mine Street, Flemington, NJ. Interment will be private. There are no calling hours. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Holcombe-Fisher Funeral Home, 147 Main Street, Flemington, NJ 08822.
Memorial contributions, in lieu of flowers, may be made in Audrey’s name to the National PKU Alliance, PO Box 501, Tomahawk, WI 54487.
Audrey’s family extend an invitation to join them for light refreshments at the Hampton Inn at 14-B Royal Road in Flemington, NJ immediately following the funeral service.
