Bennett Avila

Bennett Avila, 90, of Kingwood Township, NJ died on Friday, August 21, 2020 at his home where he lived for 60 years. Born in New York, NY on January 4, 1930, he was the son of the late Aldago and Martha Hauska D’Avilla. He was raised by his mother and aunts in Hunterdon County, NJ. He was one of twelve remaining members of the Flemington High School Class of 1949. Ben retired from his truck driving career after forty years of employment with Tarantola Trucking Company. Not to be idle after retirement, he and his wife became frequent vendors at local flea markets where they eventually specialized in Stangl Pottery. They amassed a large following among Stangl collectors and resellers, not only locally, but throughout the U.S. Predeceasing Bennett was his wife, the late Florence “Flossie” J. (Myers) Avila, who died in 2003, and his grandson, Cale D. Avila, who died in 2012. Bennett is survived by his two children, Bennett D. Avila, of Kingwood Township, NJ and Ivy Leah Avila, of Stevensville, MD and his daughter-in-law, Denise Riegle Avila and son-in law, Scott Hammersley. Bennett loved and enjoyed his three grandchildren, Bennett Graham Avila, Nicholas B. Jones and Dawn M. Godown; as well as his six great-grandchildren, Bennett G. Avila, Regan F. Avila, Owen C. Avila, Reese C. Iagnemma, Linsey B. Godown, and Abby L. Godown. Private graveside services will take place at Prospect Hill Cemetery, Flemington, NJ under the direction of the Holcombe-Fisher Funeral Home. Memorial contributions in memory of Bennett and his grandson, Cale Douglas Avila, may be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, 262 Danny Thomas Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
