Bernice S. Smith, age 75 years, of Raritan Township, NJ, died Tuesday, July 28, 2015, at the Hunterdon Medical Center, Raritan Township, NJ.
Born in Wayne, NJ, October 10, 1939, daughter of the late Murray and Daisy Jacobson, she had formerly resided in Somerville, NJ and had resided in the Flemington area since 1976.
Bernice was a graduate of William Paterson College and received her MA in Education from Rutgers University. A former elementary school teacher in Hillsborough Township, she later became a computer programmer with New York Life Insurance Co., Lebanon, NJ, until retiring.
She was an active member of the Flemington United Methodist Church and its' Bible Study Group. Bernice was also an accomplished rug hooker and was a member of the Rug Hookers Guild.
She was pre-deceased by a sister, Marilyn Gerrity and a brother, Donald Jacobsen.
Surviving are her husband of forty-nine years, A. Barrett Smith; a son and daughter-in-law, Evan Smith and Jennifer Rierson, of Greensboro, NC; a brother Eugene Jacobson and his wife, Shirley, of Allentown, PA; a sister, Elaine Larson in Connecticut; a sister-in-law, Rosella Jacobsen of New Jersey; her close family friend, Beth Jakelsky and her family; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held Monday, August 3, 2015, at 10:30 AM in the Flemington United Methodist Church, 116 Main Street, Flemington, NJ. Calling hours will be Sunday 2:00-4:00 PM at Holcombe-Fisher Funeral Home, 147 Main Street, Flemington, NJ. Interment will be in Prospect Hill Cemetery, Flemington, NJ. Memorial contributions may be made to the Flemington United Methodist Church, 116 Main Street, Flemington, NJ 08822.
