Brevoort C. Conover, former Warren County, New Jersey 4-H Agent and New Jersey State 4-H Youth Development Department Chair, died peacefully at his home in Bethlehem, PA on April 13, 2014, surrounded by his family. He was 83 years of age.
Born and raised on a farm in Pittstown, Hunterdon County, N.J., he was the son of the late Nelson and Anna (nee Miller) Conover and brother of the late A. Marie O’Neill. He was a graduate of Flemington High School, class of 1948. He received a B.S. in Animal Science from Rutgers, the State University of N.J. in 1952 and a M.Ed. from the Rutgers Graduate School of Education in 1967.
Mr. Conover proudly served as faculty of the Rutgers University Cooperative Extension for 30 years, attaining the rank of Professor 1. He served as the Warren County 4-H agent for 19 years before being elected Department Chair in 1978. He served in that position for 9 years, and then served an additional 2 years as the Extension 4-H Specialist. He was a life member of the National Association of Extension 4-H Agents, serving various offices, including national president in 1974. He retired in 1989 as Professor Emeritus. He was a member of the Rutgers Retired Faculty Association and a member of the Henry Rutgers Society. In 2010, Mr. Conover was recognized for his years of distinguished service and was inducted into the National 4-H Hall of Fame at the National 4-H Council headquarters in Chevy Chase, MD.
In addition to his career and family, he was an avid fly fisherman, a charter member of the Forks of the Delaware Chapter of Trout Unlimited.
Surviving are his loving wife of 59 years, Virginia (nee McCray) Conover; children: Mark Conover and wife Cheryl, of Firestone, CO, Martin Conover and wife Debbie, of Basking Ridge, NJ, Amy Conover Wall, of Richmond, TX, Joel Conover, of Washington, NJ; grandchildren: Clinton Conover, Brock Conover, Bryce Conover, Anita Wall and Leo Wall.
Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, April 18, 2014 in the Holcombe-Fisher Funeral Home, 147 Main Street, Flemington, NJ. Interment will follow in Locust Grove Cemetery, Quakertown, NJ. Calling hours will be Thursday, April 17, 2014 from 5:00-8:00 p.m. in the funeral home.
