Charel Y. Schaub

Charel Y. Schaub, 89, passed on April 26, 2021, at Fellowship Village, Basking Ridge, New Jersey. Born on October 15, 1931, in Somerville, she was the daughter of Willard R. Young and Bertha (Sutton) Young. She was the youngest of eight children.

Initially raised in Lebanon, NJ, Charel moved to Somerville in 1941 following the death of her mother. She graduated from Somerville High School and won a full scholarship to Douglass College (then known as the New Jersey College for Women), graduating with high honors and membership in Phi Beta Kappa and Sigma Delta Pi.

Charel worked as a bi-lingual executive secretary at Ortho Pharmaceuticals in Raritan in the 1950’s and, when her sons were older, as a substitute teacher in the Hillsborough Township school system. After returning to Hunterdon County, she worked as a part-time secretary for the Hunterdon County Chamber of Commerce.

Her social and civic involvements included service as President of the Somerset Mothers of Twins and Triplets Club, Treasurer of Somerset Medical Center Women’s Auxiliary, and as a founding member of the Auxiliary’s Ivy Twig. She was a longtime member of the Clinton Wednesday Bridge Club. She also served on the board of Visiting Health & Supportive Services and co-managed the organization’s consignment shop in Flemington for 15 years. Charel belonged to St. Thomas’ Episcopal Church in Pittstown since 1979.

Charel is survived by her sons Rick (Sue) of Washington Crossing, PA, and Kurt (Tanya) of Livermore, ME, daughter-in-law Anne of Newtown, PA, six grandsons Mark, Jr., John (Alicia), Douglas (Alexandra McIe), Bennett (Sabrina), Will (Alexa) and Bill (Hannah) and two great granddaughters Julie and Caroline. All six grandsons are Eagle Scouts. She is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews and several very special grand dogs. She was predeceased by her parents, her two brothers and five sisters and, most recently, her son Mark.

Funeral services will be private under the direction of Holcombe-Fisher Funeral Home, 147 Main Street, Flemington NJ.
