Charles A. “Chuck” Davis, age 84 years, of Sergeantsville, NJ, passed away on Friday, June 14, 2024, at the Hunterdon Care Center, Raritan Township, NJ.
Born in Metuchen, NJ, November 28, 1939, he was the son of the late Doris (Moore) Davis and the Rev. Charles A. Davis, Sr. He grew up in Piscataway, NJ and had formerly resided there, Dunellen, NJ, Ocean Park, ME in retirement, and finally Hunterdon County, NJ for the last 10 years.
As a young man, he served in the United States Air Force, where he was stationed in Alaska for two years. He then served in the Army National Guard at the Westfield Armory location for 20 years.
After his military service, he continued his service with the Plainfield Police Department. He was a police officer from 1968-1992 and thoroughly enjoyed serving his community. A people person, Chuck loved to walk the beat and loved speaking to the public, realizing how important that was in his profession. He also strongly believed in being fair to everybody no matter the circumstances. He eventually attained the rank of Sergeant, before his retirement, after 25 years, to Maine.
In his spare time, he enjoyed following the horses, especially harness racing. This meant frequent trips to the Meadowlands, NJ and Scarborough Downs, ME racetracks. Additionally, he loved to travel. In fact, he and his wife Bonnie made several cross-country trips via Route 66 to California and enjoyed places like the Florida Keys and countless others throughout the country. He was able to visit all 50 states.
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his brother and three sisters.
Surviving are his beloved wife of nearly 64 years, Bonnie (Buckmelter) Davis, whom he married on June 25, 1960. However, the two knew each other going back to their childhood living down the street from one another in the New Market section of Piscataway. They were truly lifelong companions. Also surviving are his three daughters and their spouses, Mary Anne Barney and her husband Gregg, of Flemington, NJ, Dee Magnoni and her husband Dave, of Milltown, NJ, and Charlene Santo and her husband Steve, of Three Bridges, NJ; seven grandchildren: Katie, Amanda, Scott, Rebecca, Meagan, Abi, and Lily; five great-grandchildren; as well as his sister, Nancy Jack, of Portland, ME.
Finally, the family would like to extend a heartfelt thanks to the staff at the Hunterdon Care Center who took such great care of Chuck in his final years. They are forever grateful.
Private cremation will take place at Somerset Hills Crematory, Basking Ridge, NJ. Graveside services and burial will take place at a later date in the family plot in Lake Nelson Memorial Park, Piscataway, NJ.
