Charles A. Gutschmidt, age 85 years, of Delaware Township, NJ, died Thursday, May 19, 2016, at Hunterdon Medical Center, Raritan Township, NJ.
Born in Flemington, NJ, January 12, 1931, son of the late Charles A. and Mary Sheets Gutschmidt, he had resided in Delaware Township since 1958.
Charles was a graduate of Flemington Choir School and a 1949 graduate of Flemington High School. He served with the US Air Force during the Korean War. He had advanced training at Ohio School of Trades and served at AFB, New Castle, DE. where he was with the ground maintenance division. He played in the New Castle Air Force Band which took part in special ceremonies when Richard Nixon was Dwight Eisenhower’s running mate and came to Philadelphia.
He was Service Manager in automobile dealerships and received many awards over the years for outstanding performance in General Motors “Only The Best” club. He was active in Boy Scouting and served as a scout committeeman. Charles also served with the Delaware Township Recreation Committee and was a member of the Stockton Presbyterian Church. After retiring, he and his wife traveled extensively throughout the USA and Canada in their airstream trailer spending winters in Florida.
Surviving are his wife of sixty-five years, Marjorie Van Lieu Gutschmidt; two sons, C. Edward (Deborah) Gutschmidt of Pittstown, NJ, and Bradley Gutschmidt of Stockton, NJ; a daughter, Lenore (David) Rothermel of Newberry, FL; two grandchildren, Brenda Rothermel of Ocala, FL. and Brian (Barbara) Rothermel of Jacksonville, FL.; and two sisters, Barbara Hyland of Barnegat, NJ, and Betty Jan (Fred) Dudeck of North Branch, NJ.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday, May 24,2016, at 10:30 AM in the Holcombe-Fisher Funeral Home, 147 Main Street, Flemington, NJ. Interment will be in Union Cemetery, Ringoes, NJ. Calling hours will be Monday 6:00-8:00 PM at the funeral home.
