Charles Edward Harris, age 89 years, of North Plainfield, NJ, died peacefully on Monday, October 18, 2010, at his home.
Born in Plainfield, NJ, March 13, 1921, he was the son of the late Samuel and Mabel Bond Harris.
He was a United States Army Air Corps veteran of World War II.
Known to his family and friends as "Chick", Mr. Harris graduated from Plainfield High School in 1939. He worked at Calco Chemical for one year before entering the Army Air Force. He was stationed in England where he met and married his wife Lilian Davies of Abergele, Wales. Following his service during World War II, he returned to Plainfield and worked for the New Jeresy Bell Telephone Company until retirment. He was awarded the Good Citizen Award while at Bell Telephone in August 1987 for his work with SWIM, Inc. He enjoyed gardening, hiking, camping and was an avid swimmer and competitor.
After retirement, Chick stayed active by volunteering with the Special Olympics as a coach; in SWIM, Inc., an organization that helps disabled persons; and was a former Scoutmaster with the Boy Scouts of America Troop 8 at the Crescent Avenue Church, Plainfield, NJ; and a member of the Somerset County Hiking Club.
In addition to his parents, he was pre-deceased by his brothers Jack and George, and by his sisters, Audrey, Winnie, and Enid.
Surviving are his wife of sixty-five years, Lilian Davies Harris; a daughter and son-in-law, Vivian Carol and Dennis Adams of Manchester, CT; a son and daughter-in-law, William John and Helyn Harris of Kingwood Township, NJ; a sister, Dorothy Yawlak of Manchester, NJ; five grandchildren: Stacey Adams, Stephanie Boettcher, April Mejia, Timothy Harris and Jonathan Harris; and five great-grandchildren.
Funeral Services will be held on Friday at 10 AM in the Holcombe-Fisher Funeral Home, 147 Main Street, Flemington, NJ. Interment will be in Prospect Hill Cemetery, Flemington, NJ. Calling hours will be held on Thursday from 4-8 PM in the funeral home.
