Charles G. Thorne, age 85 years, of Franklin Township, Hunterdon County, NJ, died on Saturday, September 17, 2011, in the Hunterdon Care Center, Raritan Township, NJ surrounded by family..
Born in Franklin Township, NJ, June 1, 1926, on the farm where he lived all of his life, he was the son of the late
George and Phoebe Lester Thorne.
He was a graduate of Clinton High School class of 1945, the School of Consumer Banking, University of Virginia, and the Stonier Graduate School of Banking, Rutgers University.
He was employed in banking for 18 years prior to his employment as Administrator of the Hunterdon County Board of Elections. He retired in 1991.
He was a veteran of World War II where he served on Adak in the Aleutian Islands in the Army Air Corps. He was a life member of Spruce Run Memorial VFW Post # 5119 in Glen Gardner.
Mr. Thorne was a 50 year member and Past Master of the Sidney Progressive Grange.
He was a former member and Chairman of the Franklin Township Board of Adjustment.
He was a member of the Bethlehem Presbyterian Church, having joined in 1942 and served as Sunday School Superintendent, Deacon, Elder, President of the Board of Trustee, and on many committees over the years. His Church and the Church family were very important to him.
He was a member of the Hunterdon Hills Lions Club in Clinton since 1968 and had served in all capacities in the club. He was also active on the District and State levels at one time serving as District Governor and Council Chairman for the Lions of the State of New Jersey. He was a Life Member of the Lions Eye Bank of Delaware Valley. Charles was also a progressive Melvin Jones Fellow of the Lions International.
Mr. Thorne loved bowling and golfing. He was a member of the USGA.
His wife, Helen died on June 2, 2011. They would have celebrated their 60th anniversary on September 29th. He is survived by two children, David and wife Barbara of Hatboro, PA and Judith Morgan of Flemington. Grandchildren, Jennifer Morgan, Steven Thorne & fiancé Aubrey Dimock, Edward Morgan and wife Yasmin, and Rebecca (Thorne) O’Malley and husband Sean, Great Grandsons, Jaden & Lucas Morgan, a sister, Margaret Negoescu of Bethlehem Township and a brother Robert of Bangor, PA and many nieces and nephews.
A sister, Elizabeth and two brothers George and William predeceased Charles.
A Memorial service will be held at the Bethlehem Presbyterian Church, 2 Race St, Pittstown, NJ on Sunday , Sept 25, 2011 at 2pm. Burial will be private.
