Charles W. Mathews, age 91 years, of Quakertown, NJ, died Friday, April 17, 2020, at his home surrounded by his daughters.
A lifelong resident of Quakertown, NJ, he was born February 15, 1929, son of the late Linden and Catherine Niece Mathews.
Charles was self-employed operating an egg route for forty years. He also operated Mathews Farm Stand in Quakertown and sold Christmas Trees there as well.
He was a US Navy veteran of World War 2 serving aboard the US Missouri battleship when it crossed the equator with President Harry S. Truman aboard.
Charles was active for many years in community activities. He was a member of the Quakertown United Methodist Church, charter member of the Quakertown Fire Company, member of the Quakertown Recreation Club, member of Lackatong Odd Fellows Lodge of Quakertown, Flemington VFW Post #7856 and was a former member of the Hunterdon County Board of Elections. In addition, Charles was a member of the Franklin Township Committee for twelve years and also served as Mayor of Franklin Township. In 1970 he was the Democratic candidate for Hunterdon County Freeholder.
His wife of 71 years, Marjorie Mathews, died November 9, 2019. He was also pre-deceased by his sisters, Virginia Thompson, Dorothy Smith and Madeline Haga and his brother, Donald Mathews.
Surviving are his three daughters, Beverly Joan McElroy of Effingham, IL, Linda J. Higgins of Delaware Township, NJ and Julie A. Edwards of Washington, NJ; a brother, Linden Mathews of Littleton CO; four grandchildren, Tess Edwards, Dannie Ziegler, Devon Scheier and Robert McElroy; and three great grandchildren, Quinn Ziegler, Graham Ziegler and Joey Scheier.
A public memorial service at the Quakertown Fire Company has been postponed until a later date due to the pandemic. Please continue to check this website for further details.
