Cortland Gerard Pohle, Jr., age 80 years, of Raritan Township, NJ, died on Saturday, December 20, 2008 in the Hunterdon Medical Center, Raritan Township, NJ.
Born in Brooklyn, NY, December 14, 1928, he was the son of the late Cortland G. and Verna Pohle.
Mr. Pohle graduated top of his class from the United States Coast Guard Academy. He faithfully served his country from 1951-1971 as a member of the United States Coast Guard, being honorably discharged at the rank of Commander.
Serving during both the Korean and Vietnam Wars, Commander Pohle received numerous awards and citations for his duties. Over his career, he was stationed at bases in Hawaii, Monterey, CA, Virginia Beach, VA, Cape May, NJ, Holbrook, MA, Noanck, CT and Alexandria, VA.
A member of the United States Coast Guard Academy Alumni Association, Commander Pohle was also formerly a Professor of Navigation and Electronics at the Merchant Marine Academy, Great Neck, NY.
His wife, Jeanne Lenora Morison Pohle, died in 1996 and a grandson, Michael Steven Pohle, Jr., died in 2007.
Surviving are two sons and daughters-in-law, Michael Steven Pohle, Sr. and Teresa Pohle of Raritan Township, NJ and Cortland G. Pohle III and Linda Pohle of Cyprus; two grandchildren, Nicole Jeanne Pohle and Sean Cortland Pohle; and three great grandchildren.
