Dale Moreau Killinger

July 29, 1927 — February 2, 2020

Elizabeth Dale Moreau Killinger, 92, died peacefully at Elizabeth House, a facility for hospice care in Flat Rock, N.C., on Sunday, Feb. 2, 2020.

Born in Trenton, N.J., on July 29, 1927, Dale was raised in nearby Flemington, N.J., the county seat of Hunterdon County. She was the eldest of four daughters born to Daniel Howard Moreau and his wife, Lillis Dale Simmonds Moreau.

The family owned the Hunterdon County Democrat weekly newspaper and witnessed historical events such as the trial of Bruno Hauptmann for the Lindbergh baby kidnapping. Dale and her next-oldest sister, Anne, had to elbow through crowds of curiosity-seekers, celebrities and reporters on their way to and from school.

During World War II the daughters combed Flemington for metal, paper, and rubber goods to contribute to the war effort. At night, for Civil Defense, they helped their father spot planes from the highest nearby hills.

While they were in high school and college, Dale and her sisters worked part-time at Stangl Pottery, where they hand-painted floral designs on dinnerware and various art pottery sets.

Dale graduated from Flemington High School in 1945, attended Middlebury College, and married Jack B. Killinger on Aug. 30, 1947 at the Flemington Presbyterian Church. As Jack advanced in his career with Kraft Foods, the family moved often, and in retirement, Dale and Jack chose Flat Rock, in the Blue Ridge mountains of western North Carolina.

Jack predeceased Dale on July 20, 2001. She is survived by their three sons, David, of Santa Fe, N.M.; Stephen and his family, of Waukesha, Wis.; and Daniel and his family, of Columbia, S.C.; by three grandchildren; and by Dale's sister, Anne Moreau Thomas, of Flemington. In addition to her husband, Dale was predeceased by sisters, Margaret Moreau Willett and Janet Moreau Levesley.

Dale was a member of Pinecrest Presbyterian, where she assisted with church communications. She was also a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, where she greatly enjoyed her involvement in group sewing projects to honor veterans in need. She was an avid gardener, a voracious reader and daily crossword puzzle fan.

Memorials may be sent to Pinecrest Presbyterian Church (PO Box 421, Flat Rock, N.C. 28731) and the Daughters of The American Revolution (Joseph McDowell Chapter, 110 Fawncrest Ct, Flat Rock, N.C. 28731).

Thos. Shepherd & Son Funeral Home of Hendersonville, N.C. is assisting the Killinger family with arrangements in North Carolina.
