DANIEL JOHN BATORY, age 92, departed this life Thursday morning, November 8, 2018. A resident of Honey Brook, PA the past 10 years (and Harvey’s Lake the previous 30 years), Danny passed away at the home of his daughter in New Jersey.
Danny was a graduate of Kings College in Wilkes Barre, PA, and a Veteran of the United States Army, serving during WWII. He was a high school teacher in Montgomery County, MD for 28 years before retiring to Harvey’s Lake, PA in 1980.
He was a memorable character who enjoyed chatting with anyone. He loved fishing, spending time with family and friends, watching his grandchildren play sports and his favorite lifelong pastime—running his model trains. As a devout Catholic, Danny not only practiced his faith through daily prayer and regular attendance at Mass, but he also shared his faith over the years as a religious education teacher in his home parishes and the federal state prison in Pennsylvania.
Danny was born on October 9, 1926 in Kingston, PA, the son of the late John and Mary Batory. He was married for 53 lively years to the former Joan Binns from Elkins, WV who preceded him in death on January 7, 2009. Danny lived with his daughter Jane Tinsley, her husband David and three children, Finn, Garrett and Robin, and spent long visits with his other daughters and their families: Anne Moore, husband Brian, and children Tim and Emily in Whitehouse Station, NJ and Ellen Pochekailo, husband Paul, and children Quinn, Ben, Taylor and her husband Adam in Fairfax, VA. He was very excited to recently welcome his great grandchild, Rheia into his life. Also preceeding him in death was his sister, Rita Vojcik. Danny was well loved by his family and will be sorely missed.
A funeral Mass will be held for immediate family members at St. Brendan Catholic Church, Elkins, WV at 11:00 am on Monday, November 12, 2018 followed by burial with full military honors at the St. Brendan Cemetery. A Memorial Service and Celebration of Life will be held at Our Lady of Victory Church at Harvey’s Lake, PA in late Spring 2019. New Jersey arrangements were under the direction of the Holcombe-Fisher Funeral Home, 147 Main Street, Flemington, NJ.
In lieu of flowers, please make donations to St. Jude’s Hospital or Sacred Hearts Southern Missions (shsm.org).
