Daniel Robert Shea, age 78 years, of West Amwell Township, NJ died September 23, 2011, at his home. The cause of death was related to Parkinson's disease.
Robert (as he was known) was born and raised in Pittsburgh, PA. Growing up he spent summers on his grandparent's farm in Virginia. He had been a resident of West Amwell Township since 1967.
After graduating from high school, he was briefly employed by the Pennsylvania Railroad. He was drafted during the Korean War. He retired with the rank of SFC (E-7) after 21 years in the US Army. In addition to service in Korea, he served overseas in Iceland and Vietnam with the 1st Infantry Division in 1966-1967. He also served in Alaska and Hawaii which at the time were considered overseas tours. Stateside he served in Massachusetts and several tours at Ft. Dix, NJ. While at Ft. Dix he was a basic training instructor.
Upon retirement from the army, he worked for New Jersey Department of Transportation in the Accident Record section before being forced to retire because of Parkinson's disease.
Robert loved dogs and over the years adopted several from shelters and elsewhere. In retirement he enjoyed traveling, photography, reading and listening to Irish music.
He was the son of the late Daniel and Ann Shea of Pittsburgh and was pre-deceased by his sister Kaherine Shea.
Robert is survived by his wife Martha Lambert Shea; sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Barbara Mowery Kilmer and John Kilmer of Flemington, NJ; sister-in-law, Marjorie Lambert of East Windsor, NJ; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Russell and Benedetta Lambert of Lambertville, NJ; two nieces, Beth Mowery of Hainesport, NJ and Jennifer Kopp of Brick, NJ; one nephew, Russell Lambert of Ewing, NJ; two great-nieces, Elizabeth and Michaela Kopp of Brick, NJ; and his beloved beagle Lucy.
A graveside service with Military Honors will be held Tuesday, September 27, 2011, at 11:00 a.m. in Mt. Airy Cemetery, 37 Mt. Airy Village Road, West Amwell Township, NJ under the direction of the Holcombe-Fisher Funeral Home, Flemington, NJ. There will be no calling hours.
