David M. Massie, Ph.D.

David M. Massie, age 86 years, longtime resident of Lebanon Township, NJ, died on Tuesday, March 31, 2015 in Country Arch Care Center, Pittstown, NJ. Born in Lexington, KY, February 12, 1929, he was the son of the late Francis and Edith Castle Massie. He was a United States Navy veteran. He was a graduate of Yale University, and received his Ph.D.'s from Columbia University in both Mathematics and Philosophy. He was a professor throughout most of his career, having taught at the City University of New York, Brandeis University, and the Courant Institute at NYU. He later went on to become Dean of Faculty at Somerset County College (RVCC) His time was spent, in his later years, working on mathematics and logic. He was in the process of forming a company, "T.F.L.: Computer implementation of Term Functor Logic." His invention was recently patented before his death. He was predeceased by two sons, James and Thomas Massie. Surviving are his wife, Diane Redfield Massie; a daughter, Caitlin Thomas of Santa Fe, NM; a sister, Dorothy Sawyer of Shaker Heights, OH; and three grandchildren: Daniel, Joy, and Claire. A Memorial Service will be at 2 p.m., Saturday, May 2, 2015 at St. Thomas Episcopal Church, 98 Sky Manor Road, Pittstown, NJ 08867. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Holcombe-Fisher Funeral Home, 147 Main Street, Flemington, NJ 08822.
