Deborah Jones Scammell (Debbie) passed peacefully on Monday, January 20, 2014 surrounded by family in her home near Doylestown, Pennsylvania. She was 91 years young.

She was born Deborah Harrison Jones in Brooklyn, NY, on November 10, 1922 and spent her early life living in Garden City, NY, and Washington Crossing, Pa. She attended George School and Smith College. She was the daughter of the famous aviator, Charles S. “Casey” Jones. A favorite early memory of hers was performing cartwheels for Charles Lindbergh at their Garden City home the evening before his famous solo flight across the Atlantic in 1927.

Debbie was married to Scott Scammell II, a WWII veteran, Naval Aviator and attorney, for over forty years and lived most of her adult life in Stanton, NJ. Scott was a partner in the Flemington law firm: Large, Scammell and Danziger. Debbie also lived in New Bern, NC, and ultimately Doylestown, PA, until her passing.

During her years in Hunterdon County, Debbie was active in many community organizations and volunteer groups and held many leadership positions such as President of the Women’s Club and the Garden Club. She was an avid bridge player and golfer with five holes-in-one and was a member of Copper Hill Country Club for over thirty years. She was a life member of the DAR and on the Large Foundation Board of Directors for ten years.

She is pre-deceased by her husband Scott Scammell II and son, Stephen Walker Scammell. She is survived by four children: Sue Scammell Carpenter of West Hartford CT, Scott Scammell III of Whitehouse Station, NJ, Charles Jones Scammell of Stanton, NJ, and Dr. Shelley Scammell Mendius of San Anselmo, CA; ten grandchildren and five great grandchildren.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend her viewing at Holcombe-Fisher Funeral Home, 147 Main Street, Flemington, NJ, on Sunday, January 26th from 2:00PM to 4:00PM and on Monday the 27th from 10:00AM to 11:00AM followed by funeral services at 11:00AM. www.holcombefisher.com

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Large Foundation, 171 Main Street Flemington NJ, 08822. The Large Foundation is dedicated to supporting non-profit community-based health care and social service organizations in Hunterdon County.
