Denis G.T. Hagios, age 53 years, of Alexandria Township, NJ, died on Tuesday, November 27, 2018, in the Hunterdon Medical Center, Raritan Township, NJ.
Born in Trenton, NJ, August 8, 1965, he was the son of the late Edria G.T. Hagios and Theodore A. Hagios. He attended special education classes in the Hunterdon County school system. Denis graduated from North Hunterdon High School in June 1987. Upon graduation, he began attending the Center for Educational Advancement (CEA) in Flemington, NJ. He lived with his parents Theodore and Edria Hagios in Flemington until October 2009, at which point he moved into a group home run by The Arc of Hunterdon County.
Denis enjoyed sports and participated in tennis, golf, basketball and swimming, and won numerous awards through the Special Olympics. He was featured on a Cheerios box for his outstanding achievements in golf. Some of his athletic achievements included playing tennis with Boris Becker in a doubles match at George Washington University in Washington, D.C. in 1986, and winning the Gold Medal for Golf in the Special Olympics World Games in Chapel Hill, NC in 1999 and 2001, as well as the Gold Medal at NJ State Special Olympics in 2011.
He also enjoyed watching sports on television and told people that he liked high school sports, college sports, Rutgers, and professional leagues. He always read the sports page of the newspaper from beginning to end. He played the drums and liked marching band concerts. He listened to music quite a bit, especially oldies, country western, and opera. His favorite groups included the Beach Boys and all the songs from the movie Grease. He sang along and participated in the annual talent show with The Arc of Hunterdon County. He enjoyed square dancing and was in many competitions all over the country. Denis loved to travel and had been to many different countries. Denis enjoyed attending Arc of Hunterdon recreational activities and vacations.
Surviving Denis are his cousins, Kathryn T. King of Simi Valley, California and Douglas E. Bebbington of Monroe, CT, Karen Hagios Belgrave and Jon Frederick Hagios, as well as his uncle, Frederick Karl Hagios.
Funeral Services will be held at 10:00 am on Tuesday, December 4, 2018 at the Holcombe-Fisher Funeral Home, 147 Main Street, Flemington, NJ. Interment will be in Ewing Church Cemetery, Ewing, NJ. Calling hours will be held on Monday evening from 6-8 PM at the funeral home.
