Donald James Maskell, age 80 years, of South Bound Brook, NJ, passed away on Friday, May 31, 2024, at his home.
Born in Somerville, NJ, March 16, 1944, he was the son of the late Collin S. and Annabelle (Gaddis) Maskell. He grew up in Reaville, NJ and had formerly been a long-time resident of Hunterdon County, NJ. However, he had lived for the last twenty-five years in South Bound Brook, NJ.
He graduated from Hunterdon Central Regional High School with the Class of 1962. Shortly thereafter, he proudly served in the United States Air Force from 1962-1966. He served several years at Minot Air Force Base, North Dakota, home of two major wings: the 5th Bomb Wing and 91st Missile Wing, both of the Air Force Global Strike Command (AFGSC). Additionally, while in North Dakota, he welcomed his daughters, Mary Nell and Melody Ann, into the world.
After his service, he returned to Hunterdon County, NJ, where his son, Steven Scott, was born. Don began working as a chemical analyst for Tenneco Chemical Inc., Flemington, NJ, followed by Union Carbide Corporation, Bound Brook, NJ (modern day Dow Chemical); he retired after more than thirty years on the job.
In his spare time, Don was an avid hunter and fisherman. In addition, he was the vocalist for the band “Shamrock”, and he enjoyed playing men’s league softball.
Don enjoyed life and lived it to the fullest. Talkative, he had a joke and a nickname for everybody, including “The Doobies”, comprised of his children and nieces and nephews. He would also give anybody “the shirt off his back”, this included strangers, neighbors, and family. Those closest to him will miss his larger-than-life personality and going out to the diner for breakfast. Above all, his genuine love for his family will not be forgotten.
Surviving are his three children, Mary N. Maskell of Marco Island, FL, Melody A. Maskell of Princeton, NJ, and Steven S. Maskell (Somi Kmon) of Mesa, AZ; three grandchildren, Ganni Momo, Luke Momo, and Sam Lorenz; sisters, Patricia Maskell of Flemington, NJ and Cheryll Maskell of North Carolina; as well as his beloved nieces and nephews: Heather, Alicia, Travis, and Tim.
Graveside services with military honors and interment with his late parents will take place privately in the family plot at Pleasant Ridge Cemetery, Old York Road, Ringoes, NJ.
Cremation services and arrangements are under the direction of the Holcombe-Fisher Funeral Home, 147 Main Street, Flemington, NJ 08822. For further information or to send an online condolence, please visit his Tribute Wall at www.holcombefisher.com.
