Doris Melick-Craig, age 88, passed at home of natural causes on November 19, 2017. Doris was born November 29, 1928 and raised on the “Melick Dairy Farm” on Homestead Road, Oldwick, NJ. Doris was one of three children, brothers Donald and Robert, to the late and loving parents Margaret and James Melick, Oldwick, NJ. She attended the Flemington High School and graduated in 1946. After graduation, she started working for the Prudential Insurance Company in Newark, NJ.
Doris married Robert Keith Schermerhorn in December 1947 at Zion Lutheran Church, Oldwick, NJ. They raised three children, Sharon Santillo, of Flemington NJ, Robert K. Schermerhorn Jr. and his wife, Barbara, of Windermere, FL and Suzanne Schermerhorn, of Flemington. Also surviving is her grandson Brian Santillo, of Atlanta, GA.
After her husband’s passing in 1975, Doris joined the NJ State Court Department processing traffic violations supporting 6 surrounding counties, until she retired in 2000 after 25 years of faithful service. In addition to starting a new career outside the home, Doris wed her second husband, Dr. Frank Lisi from Clinton, NJ. They enjoyed traveling to many exotic ports of call around the world. They lived in Annandale NJ, until Frank’s passing in 1997.
Doris married John Miller Craig, Oldwick, NJ in April 1999 and they resided together at the “Craigmar Farm” for 16 beautiful years until his passing in 2015. Surviving Miller, were his 3 daughters, Marsha Livingston, Milene Miller and Marbey Berry.
In lieu of flowers, the family has requested donations in Doris’ name be sent to the Zion Lutheran Church, PO Box 41, Oldwick, NJ 08858 or the Living Waters Lutheran, Church 11 Old York Rd, Ringoes, NJ 08551.
Funeral service will be Wednesday, November 22. 2017 at 2:30 PM at the Zion Lutheran Church, 56 Old Turnpike Rd, Oldwick, NJ 08858. Interment will follow next to her beloved husband, Robert Keith Schermerhorn, at the Union Cemetery in Lebanon, NJ. Visitation will be held Wednesday from 11:30 am to 1:30 pm at Holcombe-Fisher Funeral Home, 147 Main Street, Flemington, NJ.
