Doris Becroft Havran

Doris Becroft Havran, age 94, passed away Sunday, July 10, 2022 at the Hunterdon Care Center in Raritan Township, NJ. Born June 8, 1928 in the Bronx, NY, Doris was the daughter of the late Walter and Anne (Riley) Becroft. As a child her family moved to Green Brook NJ and after her marriage to the late John Havran in 1950 they resided in Newark, NJ. A few moves later within New Jersey, the couple settled in Hunterdon County where Doris has lived for the past 40 years. She graduated from Rider College (now Rider University) and worked as a teacher for a number of years. Later in life she became a licensed insurance broker and helped in her family’s Dunellen, NJ insurance business. Doris was charitable to her core and was driven to serve those in need, from institutionalized elderly to families of the incarcerated. In conjunction with groups such as Lutheran Church Women (where she served as President) and Church Women United, she led an interfaith collaboration that focused on improving relations between members of multiple faiths. At one point, she ran for public office as the Somerset County Sherriff in an effort to reform the correction facilities’ treatment of incarcerated women. The theme of following in Christ’s footsteps to give aid and comfort to the most needy was consistent throughout her life. After receiving her Masters Degree in Theology Doris worked as the Director of Christian Education at Flemington Presbyterian Church in Flemington NJ, helping to providing guidance on curriculum development and education administration for that parish. Doris had a love for animals, German Shepherd Dogs in particular, and she had many dogs throughout her life, some of which were rescues in need of a good home. Doris was very strong in her faith and became a long-time member of the Zion Lutheran Church in Oldwick NJ, where she was involved in various aspects of the church community for many years. Doris was predeceased by her husband of 68 years, John Havran in 2018. She is survived by her two sons and their spouses, Gary John and Cynthia Havran of Portsmouth RI, and Joel John and Lori Havran of Waynesboro VA, and her daughter, Ann Doris Havran of Dunellen NJ as well as her beloved surviving German Shepherd, Roxy. Graveside services will be held at 2:00 pm on Wednesday, July 13, 2022 at New Germantown Cemetery, 27 Joliet St., Oldwick NJ 08858. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Holcombe-Fisher Funeral Home, 147 Main Street, Flemington NJ.
