Dorothy A. Beaver Tobias

July 15, 1944 — May 7, 2023

Dorothy Ann Beaver Tobias died on Sunday, May 7, 2023, surrounded by family and friends at her home in California where she had been a long-time resident.

She was born in Danville, PA, but grew up on a dairy farm outside of Flemington, NJ. She was active at Hunterdon Central Regional High School as a cheerleader and a modern dance club member.

She was a graduate of Goldey Beacom School of Business in Wilmington, DE, East Carolina University where she was a member of Alpha Phi Sorority, Goethe Institute in Germany, and received her master’s degree in linguistics from California State University.

Dottie had an unsatiable curiosity and led a life full of adventure, learning, and travel. She backpacked across western and eastern Europe, worked in Germany speaking fluent German, lived with a family in Switzerland who became lifelong friends with her when she worked for the Migros Company there. She taught ESL in Poland and traveled with educators in China. She retired from many years of teaching ESL at Orange Coast College in California.

Dorothy was pre-deceased by her parents, Elmer C. Beaver and Marjorie Smith Beaver and her nephew, Robert C. Beaver, Jr.

Left behind to cherish her memory are her husband, Paterik Tobias; her brother, Robert C. Beaver (Noreen); her sister, Judith B. Pixton; niece Daphne Beaver, her daughter, Courtney Beaver and son, Nicholas Mengucci, niece Kimberly Millar (Scott), Julie Pixton Selby and her children, Andrew, Slater, Ryan, Jake, Sloane and her son, Ethan Young in addition to her devoted friend, Steve.

Having attended the Three Bridges Reformed Church as a young girl, her Christian faith was a large part of who she was. The 23rd Psalm and John 14, 1-3 were a comfort to her in the end.

Funeral services will be held Friday, May 19, 2023, at 11:00 AM in the Holcombe-Fisher Funeral Home, 147 Main Street, Flemington, NJ. Burial will follow in Three Bridges Cemetery, Three Bridges, NJ. Calling hours will be Friday 10:00 AM to the time of the funeral service at the funeral home.

Dorothy had a compassionate soul for animals. Memorial contributions may be made to Best Friends, Save Them All, Kanab, Utah or Tabby’s Place, Ringoes, NJ 08551. Finally, the family wishes to express their thanks to the “angels” from hospice who cared for her during her final days.
