Dorothy A. Melovitz, R.N., age 75 years, of Delaware Township, NJ, died on Thursday, September 23, 2010, at her home.
Born on March 21, 1935 in Kingston, PA, daughter of the late Anthony and Mary Legas Austin, she had lived in Hunterdon County, NJ since 1962.
A graduate of Kingston High School, Kingston, PA, Mrs. Melovitz went on to graduate from Nesbitt Memorial Hospital School of Nursing, Kingston, PA in 1956 and then continued on to receive her BSN from St. Joe's College, North Windham, ME.
She worked for many years at the Hunterdon Medical Center, Raritan Township, NJ as a Medical-Surgical Nurse, an Emergency Room Nurse and both as an Evening and Night Supervisor where she was fondly known as 'Dottie'. Her thirty five year career was characterized by her passion and devotion to patient care and the respect and admiration of her colleagues.
Mrs. Melovitz was a member of the Red Hat Society and of the Delaware Township Senior Citizens.
A communicant of St. Magdalen Church, Flemington, NJ, she was a member of the Rosary Altar Society and a devotee of Our Mother of Perpetual Help.
Throughout her 12 year battle with cancer, Dorothy exemplified courage, faith, love, and spirit that impacted everyone she met. She enjoyed yoga, walking, travel, nature and was devoted to her grandsons playing high school football. She attended, in six years, over sixty games in spite of her illness and she was fortunate to enjoy two state championship games of her grandson, Sean. Some of her favorite trips were to Sedona, AZ, Nantucket, MA, Martha's Vineyard, MA and Naples, FL.
Surviving are her husband, Philip Melovitz; two daughters, Annette Melovitz and Susan Melovitz Egan, both of Stockton, NJ; two grandsons, Alex Egan of Fullerton, CA and Sean Philip Egan, currently a Junior at Penn State University; and three brothers, Anthony, Robert and Richard Austin, all of Mooretown, PA.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday at 10:00 a.m. in St. Magdalen Church, 105 Mine Street, Flemington, NJ under the direction of the Holcombe-Fisher Funeral Home, 147 Main Street, Flemington, NJ. Interment will follow in St. Magdalen Cemetery, North Main Street, Flemington, NJ. Calling hours will be Sunday from 4:00-6:00 p.m. in the Funeral Home.
