Dorothy June Hamm

January 6, 1936 — June 19, 2023

Dorothy “Dottie” June (Barnes) Hamm, age 87 years, passed away on Monday, June 19, 2023, at the Foothill Acres Rehabilitation & Nursing Center, Hillsborough Township, NJ.

Born in Chicago, IL, January 6, 1936, she was the daughter of the late John “Jack” and Alice (Brady) Barnes. She grew up in the Chicago area, graduated from Saint Thomas the Apostle High School in Hyde Park, Chicago, IL, and married her high school sweetheart, James E. Hamm, Jr. She and her husband eventually settled in the Potomac, MD and Centreville, MD areas for most of their lives.

Dottie was active throughout her life in just about everything. Growing up she enjoyed horseback riding, fishing, sailing, and quail hunting with her father. She was even an aviator, piloting airplanes with her family. She also enjoyed travelling, especially to Australia where she and Jim lived for three years.

She was a Certified Cash Manager for most of her career, trading commercial paper on the global financial market. She received the prestigious Jefferson Cup Award for her work on the successful merger of Lockheed and Martin. She was formerly employed at Lockheed Martin’s corporate headquarters in Rockville, MD, retiring after over 30 years of dedicated service.

Following retirement, she pursued religious studies at Catholic University of America and served as an Ecumenical Minister, and in the Loaves and Fishes and Repast Ministries. She was a parishioner of Saint Raphael Catholic Church, Rockville, MD and Mother of Sorrows Church, Centreville, MD. Additionally, she was an active volunteer and community leader all her life. She founded a local food bank in Maryland, participated in boy scouts and girl scouts, and even helped drive women in distress to hotels to avoid domestic violence.

She will be remembered for being the anchor and “mama bear” of not only her own family, but everyone who had the pleasure of being in her orbit. Someone who was always willing to lend a helping hand.

In addition, to her parents, she was predeceased by her late husband, James E. Hamm, Jr., who died in 2020.

Surviving are four children, Patrice Hamm, Jim Hamm (Wendy), Jack Hamm (Clare) and Cathy Hamm (Christopher); six grandchildren, Jim, Christina, Madeleine, Joseph, Carson, and Sydney; as well as her three siblings, Betty Ann Duperray (Bernie), Patricia Beal (Bill), and Kenneth Barnes (Corrine).
