Douglas H. Niece, age 94 years, of Raritan Township, NJ, died Saturday, July 19, 2014, at Hunterdon Care Center, Raritan Township, NJ.
Born in Flemington, NJ, April 12, 1920, son of the late Harmon and Bessie Vogel Niece, he had resided in the Flemington area all his life.
He was a 1939 graduate of Flemington High School and was a printer with the Hunterdon County Democrat for fifty-one years until retiring.
The longest serving Cubmaster in the United States, he served Pack 61 of Flemington in that capacity over sixty years. In some instances he served three generations of Cub Scouts from the same family. Doug received many awards for his services to scouting including the "Silver Beaver".
Always active in the community, he was a member, elder and deacon of the Flemington Presbyterian Church where he also sang in the church choir, was a former Sunday School Superintendent and Sunday School teacher there. He was a graduate of the Flemington Children's Choir School, served on its Board of Trustees and led a group of Sunday Morning carolers in Flemington until he was 85. Doug also was a reading volunteer at Franklin Township Elementary School.
He was also a member of the Hunterdon County Chrysanthemum Society and the education director of the N.J. State Chrysanthemum Society.
His wife, Frances Miller Niece, died in 1982 and his brother, Donald Niece, died in 2005.
Surviving are two nephews and a niece.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, July 24, 2014, at 10:30 AM in the Flemington Presbyterian Church, Main Street, Flemington, NJ, followed by interment in Prospect Hill Cemetery, Flemington, NJ. Calling hours will be Wednesday 6:00-8:00 PM at Holcombe-Fisher Funeral Home, 147 Main Street, Flemington, NJ.
