Mr. Druie Edward Cavender, Jr., age 88 years, of Raritan Township, NJ, died on Wednesday, January 2, 2008 in the Hunterdon Care Center, Raritan Township, NJ, after a short illness.
Mr. Cavender was born in Harrisburg, IL on May 4, 1919, the son of Alathea (nee Caldwell) and Druie E. Cavender, Sr., Attorney-at-Law. He graduated from Southern Illinois University in Carbondale with a B.S. degree in education. He earned a Doctor of Jurisprudence degree from the University of Notre Dame School of Law, graduating third in his class. Following graduation in 1946, Mr. Cavender practiced with his father in Harrisburg for several years. He also served one term as State's Attorney for Saline County, IL.
He joined the legal department of Marathon Oil Company in 1953 in Terre Haute, IN. He was transferred to the general office for Marathon in Findlay, OH in 1962. He retired in 1978 as a Senior Attorney for Transportation and General Administration. He was admitted to practice law in Illinois, Indiana, and Ohio.
Mr. Cavender served as a member and Chairman of the Findlay Civil Service Commission, and belonged to the American Bar Association.
Following retirement, he and his wife Dorothy moved to Osage Beach, MO. Mr. Cavender and his family had vacationed in that area at the Lake of the Ozarks for many years, where he enjoyed boating and water skiing. In addition, he was fond of refinishing antique furniture. In 2001, the couple moved to Flemington to be near their children's families.
Mr. Cavender is survived by his wife of sixty-three years, Dorothy (nee Quinn) Cavender. His son and daughter-in-law, Druie E. Cavender III and Elaine (nee Pratt) Cavender, as well as his daughter, Johanna, also make their homes in Flemington. A sister, Gertrude Stanley, lives in Tulsa OK. A brother, Dean, preceded him in death.
Mr. Cavender was the loving grandfather of eight and great-grandfather of five. He also leaves to mourn several nieces and nephews and many friends.
