Dunbar Whitman, age 92 years, of Raritan Township, NJ, died on Saturday, July 31, 2004 at the Hunterdon Care Center, Raritan Township, NJ.
Born July 6, 1912 in Portland, Maine to the late Charles Huntington Whitman and Rachel Foster Whitman, he had resided in Raritan Township for the past five years, having previously lived in Guilderland, NY for twenty-five years and Plainfield, NJ for many years before that.
Mr. Whitman received his B.A. from Rutgers University in 1934 and was a Banker for over twenty years with Key Bank, Albany, NY.
A United States Army Veteran of WWII, he received many honors, among them a Bronze Star and a Purple Heart. Mr. Whitman was honorably discharged with the rank of Major. He was involved with the D-Day Invasion of Normandy, landing on Utah Beach.
He was a member of the Cap and Skull Society of Rutgers University and involved with the Wardlaw School, formerly located in Plainfield, NJ, currently in Edison, NJ.
His wife, Edwina Rodney Whitman, died in 1999. He is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Robert D. and Sharon Whitman of Stewartsville, NJ; two grandsons, Brian Whitman of Reading, PA and Kevin Whitman of Oak Hill, VA; and one sister, Esther Whitman Reilly of Menlo Park, CA.
Graveside Services will be held on Tuesday at 1:30 p.m. in Rural Hill Cemetery, Whitehouse Station, NJ under the direction of the Holcombe-Fisher Funeral Home, 147 Main Street, Flemington, NJ. The Funeral Cortege will be leaving from the Funeral Home at 1:00 p.m. for the Cemetery. Please visit www.holcombefisher.com for further information.
