A proud, lifelong resident of Locktown, NJ, Edward "Milt" Smith, age 94 years, passed away on Thursday, August 2, 2012 in Country Arch Care Center, Union Township, Hunterdon County, NJ.
Born in Locktown, NJ, May 14, 1918, he was the son of the late Joseph L. and Mary Olive Biggs Smith.
After serving his country in World War II as a B-24 "Liberator" pilot, Milt returned home to become a dedicated civic leader, most notably as Mayor of Delaware Township, NJ and president of the district school board. The Delaware Township School in Sergeantsville was built under his leadership. A trustee of the Friends of the Locktown Stone Church, he was instrumental in preserving the historic meetinghouse, now listed on the National Register of Historic Sites.
Milt was a gifted public speaker who always had an interesting story to tell. He was passionate about aircraft and flying, and an avid auto racing fan too. He knew every back road in the county and he and his wife Alletta spent many happy hours zooming around the countryside on his motorcycle.
Growing up behind the counter of his father's general store during the Depression taught him the lessons of thrift and hard work. He was the third generation of Smiths to attend the same one-room schoolhouse in Locktown. A 1936 graduate of Flemington High School, he attended Centre College in Kentucky, completing the rigorous Army Air Corps training program there. He worked for many years as a manager at a Flemington automotive dealership and later became an auditor for Selective Insurance. Until his recent illness, he had lived in the same house in the heart of Locktown his entire life.
Pre-deceased by his older brother Frank and by Alletta, his beloved wife of sixty-seven years, Milt is remembered with pride by his children: Aileen Boustedt (Robert) of Redmond, WA, Dennis Smith of Hampton, NJ and Randy Smith of Springtown, PA; and three grandsons, Kristofor Boustedt, Kenneth Smith, and Erik Smith. He will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.
Funeral Services will be held on Monday at 10:30 AM in the Holcombe-Fisher Funeral Home, 147 Main Street, Flemington, NJ. Interment will follow in Rosemont Cemetery, Rosemont, NJ. Calling hours will be held on Sunday from 6-8 PM in the funeral home.
Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association, or to the Friends of the Locktown Stone Church, PO Box 264, Sergeantsville, NJ 08557.
