Edwin B. Slomka, MD of Flemington, New Jersey passed away peacefully on November 11, 2019. He was 93 years old.
Born in Manhattan, New York on January 18, 1926 to Tina and Sol Slomka, Ed grew up in the city with his older brother, Bruce. He graduated from Poly Prep Academy (Brooklyn) in 1942 at the age of 16 and attended Hamilton College until he was old enough to enlist in the Army. During World War II Ed served in the Lower Rhine region of Germany and was severely wounded in combat. He spent a year and a half convalescing and was awarded a Purple Heart. He returned to Hamilton College where he was a member of the varsity swim team, to complete his studies and graduated in 1948. Ed attended Downstate Medical School in New York and became an ophthalmologist like his father.
He met his future bride, Joan Ruth Noonan while doing his residency at Lenox Hill Hospital in New York. The two married in 1957 and moved to Flemington, New Jersey where they resided for 62 years in the home they built. Ed practiced at Hunterdon Medical Center for 3 years before moving his practice to Somerville, New Jersey. He was Chief of Ophthalmology at Somerset Medical Center until his retirement at age 70.
Ed was a devoted father and grandfather. He was a skilled golfer, avid skier, boater and sailor. He had a passion for all sports, cheering for all the New York teams. Ed was a member of Raritan Valley Country Club for almost 50 years.
Ed is survived by his wife of 62 years, Joan (Noonan) Slomka, a daughter Laura and her husband Roger Bodman, a son Douglas and his wife Lori Slomka, two grandchildren, Jamie and Jack Slomka.
Visitation will be from 4:00 to 7:00 pm on Friday, November 15, 2019 at Holcombe-Fisher Funeral Home in Flemington, NJ and at the request of Ed, the memorial service will be private.
