Elizabeth A. Brandenburg

July 20, 1930 — January 15, 2023

Elizabeth “Betty” A. Brandenburg, 92, passed on January 15, 2023 after a brief illness at home. Born July 20, 1930, the daughter of Dorothy née Porter and Clarence Brokaw, Betty was raised on the family dairy farm in Three Bridges, NJ.

Betty graduated from Flemington High School in 1948 and went on to Trenton State College (now The College of New Jersey), where she graduated in 1952 with a degree in Business Education. She went to work at Johnson & Johnson where, in her role as supervisor of the secretarial pool, she was the first woman invited to join the company management club.

At J&J, she met the love of her life, production supervisor, George. They married in 1953 and moved to a house in Neshanic, NJ, where they remained for the rest of her life. She took time off from working following the birth of their daughter in 1959. Volunteer work at her daughter’s elementary school library inspired her to earn a second degree in Library Science. This led to her appointment as head librarian at Hillsborough Middle School, where she remained until her retirement.

Betty was an adventurous international traveler who loved exploring lesser-known destinations. She led her daughter’s Girl Scout troop for many years, taking them on winter camping trips, to the top of Mount Katahdin in Maine, and on a backpacking tour of the National Girl Scout Camp in Wyoming. She enjoyed hiking, gardening, and experimenting with new recipes, and especially loved vacations at the family cabin in Maine, where she was regularly seen picking wild blueberries, kayaking in the mornings, or on her daily walks.

She is survived by her husband of 69 years, George; sister Carol Hrubesh; daughter Susan Schaub (Rick); her two grandchildren, Dara Schaub and William Schaub (Alexa); and two great-grandchildren, Raelynn and Luke.

Betty would love for you to read a banned book and to protect and appreciate your local wildlife. In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to the American Library Association’s Office for Intellectual Freedom at ec.ala.org/donate ; or the Pleasant Pond Protective Association, PO Box 36, Caratunk ME 04925.
