Emily Caldwell Morrison, age 26 years, of Raritan Township, NJ, passed away on Saturday, March 1, 2014, at home.
Emily was born April 15, 1987, in Rockville, MD to Mack and Alice Morrison. She had resided in the area since 1991 and New York City since 2009.
Emily was most recently employed as a Senior Private Client Associate with Alliance Bernstein. While at Alliance Bernstein, Emily brought passion to everything she did. She took an idea to help young students and graduates succeed in the business world and nurtured it into a program entitled Bernstein University. Also, Emily participated in Bernstein’s first outreach program with Citizen Schools.
In addition to her parents, she is survived by her brother, Robert of Baltimore, MD, her dog Tate, four aunts and uncles and seven cousins. She was predeceased by her paternal grandparents, Boyce and Vera Morrison and her maternal grandparents, John and Beverly Arico. Her extended family included four Rotary Exchange students from Indonesia, Brazil and Turkey.
Emily was a 2005 graduate of Hunterdon Central Regional High School. She graduated in 2009 from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University with a B.A. in Economics. During college she was an active member of Kappa Delta Sorority and held leadership positions in the Virginia Tech student-investor program SEED (Student-managed Endowment for Educational Development). Following graduation she was an active member of the Virginia Tech Alumni group, Manhattan Hokies.
Emily was diagnosed in 2011 with a rare type of brain tumor. Influenced by Aung San Suu Kyi’s quote “If you’re feeling helpless, help someone” she began raising funds for the National Brain Tumor Society (NBTS). Over the past three years she was an advocate for brain tumor research and for young adult cancer survivors. To date she raised over $70,000 for NBTS and $15,000 for stupidcancer.org. The Expect Miracles Foundation recognized her as the 2013 Inspirational Contributor for her cancer fundraising efforts.
Our Sweet Emily was taken much too soon and will always be missed. Most recently in her blog (www.emilyinthecity.com), she posted words that we should all live by; “YOU should be having more fun. If you’re not, you’re doing it wrong. If you hate something in your life - change it.”
