Eugene J. Taylor Jr., age 88 years, of Flemington, NJ, died Thursday, April 6, 2017 at the Hunterdon Care Center, Flemington, NJ, surrounded by his family. Gene was born in Easton, PA, June 2, 1928, son of the late Eugene J. Taylor Sr. and Marie (Bennett) Taylor and resided in the Flemington area since 1941. After graduating from Flemington High School in 1948, he proudly served in the United States Army. Gene was based in El Paso, TX, at Fort Bliss with the 68th AAA Gun Battalion (90MM) during the Korean War, obtaining the rank of Staff Sergeant. After completing his full term of service, he was employed by Somerset Press/Forbes Newspapers for forty one years, retiring in 1990. He then took on a part time position at Flemington Car and Truck Dealerships. Gene enjoyed attending car shows and his lifetime hobby, restoring antique cars. He also had many other interests including traveling with his wife and family, watching NFL football, especially the Dallas Cowboys and NASCAR racing. He was a parishioner of St. Magdalen de Pazzi Catholic Church in Flemington, was a life member of Flemington American Legion Post 159 and was past President and member of Three Bridges Fire Company. Gene was predeceased by a brother, Donald Taylor in 1987. Surviving are his loving wife of 64 years, Margaret (Higgins) Taylor; two sons and spouses, Eugene J. and Elizabeth Taylor III of Flemington, NJ, Robert and Michele Taylor of Annandale, NJ; two daughters, Kathleen Taylor and James Herschell of Branchburg, NJ, and Margaret and Neil Costanzo of Raritan, NJ; six grandchildren, Neil Eugene, Elizabeth, Dallas, Dana, Jesse and Nicolas Taylor, two sisters; Louise Maddalena and Marie Worman and brother Robert F. Taylor and numerous nieces and nephews. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 am on Tuesday, April 11, 2017 at St. Magdalen Church 105 Mine Street, Flemington NJ. Entombment will follow in St. Magdalen Mausoleum in Flemington. There are no public calling hours. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Holcombe-Fisher Funeral Home, 147 Main Street, Flemington NJ. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Gene’s name may be made to St. Magdalen Church, 105 Mine Street, Flemington NJ 08822 or the Hunterdon Hospice, 2100 Wescott Drive, Flemington NJ 08822.
