Florence Lesser Komisar passed away on February 11, 2021 at age 97. Shortly before Valentine’s Day, a holiday she loved. It gave her an excuse to show more love to all.
She was exceedingly careful to keep herself safe in these pandemic times. But nothing was enough. Covid-19 did not care about the wonderful woman it was taking from the earth. She was a magical person. If only her magic could have destroyed the virus before it destroyed her. It should not have happened.
We are heartbroken to have lost her. She brightened so many lives with her wisdom, humor, and kindness. She was pure gold, a gift to all who met her.
She was lively and vivacious until the end and was the youngest 97-year-old you could ever meet. She was born on September 19, 1923 and lived her entire life in Hunterdon County, NJ, in Flemington, Ringoes and finally Frenchtown. She and her husband Sam were married in 1943. They had a lifetime of tales in their 72 years together.
Florence spent those years bringing joy and love to all who met her. She contributed to her community and her family. This included a 50-year membership in the Woman’s Club (Flemington and Frenchtown), President of the Ringoes Ladies Auxiliary, PTA, member of the Hunterdon Central Board of Education, Hospice volunteer, tour guide for Senior trips, performing in the community theatre production at Riegel Ridge, and not least, for years hosting the entire high school band for a celebration after the Flemington Memorial Day parade.
Her cooking was her delight and provided the same to those around her. Fortunately, we videotaped her preparing some of her most special dishes. That will give us the opportunity to recreate her food and maintain her memory.
Her kitchen was a central gathering place. It began with her amazing (and endless) food. With her welcoming arms and open heart, she drew relatives and friends to her farmhouse kitchen. She wanted to be sure no would be without comfort or food.
After years spent on the farms in New Jersey, Flo and Sam began escaping winters in New Jersey to live in Winter Garden, Florida. They had 24 years there enjoying the sun. In her final years, Flo lived in independent living. She was fortunate to spend happy times with many new friends, especially Joe Piscatello. He and his family provided three years of companionship and joy.
Florence is survived by three daughters, of whom she was endlessly proud, and their families. Felice and Donald Firestone of Phillipsburg, Jeanne and Louis Lawrence Zuegner III of Ringoes, and Alice and Dave Phillips of Phillipsburg. Other family members include granddaughter Spring (Zuegner) LaFevre, her husband Dana, and their children Louis and Felice. In addition are two grandsons, Louis Lawrence Zuegner IV, his wife Maggie and children, Louis Lawrence V (Quin), Isabelle, Zander and Keegan of New Hope, PA and Sam Zuegner of Gold Beach. OR. She was predeceased by her brothers George and Howard, and her sister Lillian.
The world has lost one of its best.
