Frank X. Gilmartin

Francis “Frank” X. Gilmartin, long-time resident of Flemington Borough and Hunterdon County, NJ, passed away on Tuesday, May 11, 2021 in the Hunterdon Medical Center, Raritan Township, NJ. He was 82 years old. Born in Queens, NY on August 13, 1938, he was the son of the late John and Winifred (Smith) Gilmartin. At the age of thirteen, he and his family moved from the city to Three Bridges, NJ. He had resided in this area for the last seventy years. After he graduated from the Brooklyn High School of Automotive Trade in 1957, Frank enlisted in the United States Navy and served honorably as a Seabee from 1957-1961. Later, he also served in the United States Army National Guard from 1974-1975. After his service, Frank would go on to be employed by the Tenneco chemical company in Flemington until its closure. He then worked in the Maintenance Department for the Flemington-Raritan School District, working in all five schools until his retirement. Moreover, Frank was also the Flemington Borough Fire Marshal. Frank was a devoted member of the Flemington Fire Department, serving in nearly every capacity there over the last fifty-two years, this included Department Chief from 1993-1995. Additionally, Frank was a firearm enthusiast and member of the National Rifle Association. In his spare time, he enjoyed building models and rooting for the Oakland, Los Angeles and now, Las Vegas Raiders. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his brother, John Gilmartin, who died in 2019. Surviving are his three children, Debra Gilmartin, of Flemington Borough, NJ, Dave Gilmartin, of Kingwood Township, NJ, and Dan Gilmartin, of Rushland, PA; and three grandchildren, James Gilmartin, Tyler Gilmartin, and Mathew Gilmartin. A visitation will take place on Monday, May 17, 2021 from 5:00-7:00 PM in the Holcombe-Fisher Funeral Home, 147 Main Street, Flemington, NJ. Following the visitation, a firemen’s service will begin promptly at 7:00 PM officiated by Flemington Fire Department Chaplain Rev. Chris Heitkamp. However, due to the national cemetery schedule, funeral services will not take place until Saturday, May 29, 2021 at 11:30AM in the funeral home followed by burial with full military honors at 1:30PM in Washington Crossing National Cemetery, Newtown, PA. Arrangements are under the direction of the Holcombe-Fisher Funeral Home, 147 Main Street, Flemington, NJ 08822. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Frank’s name may be made to the Flemington Fire Department, 38 Park Avenue, Flemington, NJ 08822.
