Frederick Charles Polacsek, age 103 years, of Quakertown, NJ died Monday, June 5, 2023, at the Country Meadows Retirement Community in Forks Township, PA.
Born in New York City, NY, on May 29, 1920, he was the son of the late Charles and Elizabeth (Brautigam) Polacsek.
Living in Quakertown, NJ most of his life, he graduated from Flemington High School in the Class of 1939.
Fred was a World War II Army veteran, serving proudly for five years. He fought in Europe with a unit attached to the Second Armored Division in the Battle of Normandy, Northern France, Central Europe, The Rhineland, and was decorated with the Bronze Star for valor in combat during the Battle of the Bulge. He received the European-African Eastern Campaign Medal with the Silver Star.
Fred was a granite cutter by profession, carving and engraving cemetery monuments throughout the states of New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Vermont. He was the owner of a granite business, Quaker Memorial Works in Quakertown, NJ that he operated for forty years with the assistance of his loving wife Jean. The business was rated as one of the top Rock of Ages monument dealerships in the country.
Fred served two terms as a Franklin Township Committeeman and as Mayor. He was a member of the Township Planning Board and during his term he compiled, and the committee passed, its first zoning and subdivision ordinance.
Fred was a charter member of the Quakertown Fire Company, serving as its secretary for twelve years. He was a past member of the Quakertown Recreation Club and served as its treasurer. He was a member of the West Jersey Masonic Association, Clinton Chapter, Royal Arch Mason, The Tall Cedars of Lebanon, Flemington VFW Post 7856, and The Battle of the Bulge Association.
He was a life-long member of the Quakertown United Methodist Church, and a former member and president of the Locust Grove Cemetery Association.
Fred is survived by his wife of seventy-four years, Jean (Taylor) Polacsek; his daughters, Ellen Powers of Annandale, NJ and Donna Taylor of Quakertown, NJ; his six grandchildren, Brian Powers, Kevin Powers, Courtney Gentile, Carrie Schillaci, Kristen Schillaci, and Heather Schillaci, as well as four great grandchildren, Peter, Leo, Gianluca and Alessio.
Masonic services followed by funeral services will begin on Sunday, June 11, 2023, at 1:30 PM at Holcombe-Fisher Funeral Home, 147 Main Street, Flemington, NJ followed by interment with military honors in Locust Grove Cemetery, Quakertown, NJ. Calling hours will be Sunday, 12:30 PM until the time of service at the funeral home.
