Dr. Frederick J. McEliece, age 71 years, of West Amwell Township, NJ, died on Sunday, April 10, 2011, at his residence.

Born in Philadelphia, PA, September 15, 1939, he was the son of the late John and Grace Connell McEliece.

He was a graduate of Hahnemann University, Philadelphia, PA, and was a Neurosurgeon for many years in Mercer County, NJ at Capital Health Systems and in Hunterdon County, NJ at the Hunterdon Medical Center.

Dr. McEliece was the Chairman of the Department of Surgery at Capital Health Systems at Fuld Campus and Mercer Campus. He was Diplomat of the National Board of Medical Examiners, the Candidate Group of the American College of Surgeons, member of the Mercer Medical Society, member of the American Board of Neurological Surgery, a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, a member of the American Association of Neurological Surgeons, and a member of the North American Spinal Society.

He is survived by his wife of thirty years, Monica Collins McEliece; four sons, Frederick John McEliece of Panama City Beach, FL, John P. McEliece of Boston, MA, Richard M. McEliece of Sumneytown, PA, and Lucas Joseph McEliece of Lambertville NJ; two daughters, Adrienne McEliece of Williamsport, PA, and Bridget McEliece of Lambertville, NJ; a sister, Grace Flinterman, of Havertown, PA; and four grandchildren.

Private Funeral Services and visitation will be held on Saturday in the Holcombe-Fisher Funeral Home, 147 Main Street, Flemington, NJ. Interment will be private.

Memorial contributions in Dr. McEliece's memory, in lieu of flowers, may be made to the Phialdelphia Zoo, 3400 West Girard Avenue, Attn: Development Director, Philadelphia, PA 19104.
