George V.D. Titus, 85, died Wednesday, August 3, 2005 at Hunterdon Care Center in Raritan Township, NJ.
Born in Delaware Township to the late George H. And Carrie Van Dyke Titus, he lived on the family dairy farm and raised his family there before building a house on the farm's land in West Amwell Township.
He raised much of his family's food, including livestock, and canned and froze fruits and vegetables from his gardens, along with his wife of 62 years, Jean Lambert Titus. He was very devoted to his wife, who now lives at the New Jersey Masonic Home in Burlington.
Outgoing and well known, Mr. Titus had many friends. He enjoyed visiting with them and playing card games with family and friends, particularly pinocle.
He was an active volunteer. He was past master of Orpheus Lodge, F. & A.M. in Stockton and treasurer there since 1971. In 1996, he was Senior Grand Steward of the Grand Lodge of New Jersey.
He was a life member of the West Amwell Volunteer Fire Company, where he also blended the popular sauce for the annual Chicken Barbecue.
Mr. Titus was a trustee emeritus at the Holcombe-Jimison Farmstead Museum in Delaware Township, where he was elected this year to the Farmers Honor Roll.
He used to call bingo games at the firehouse, then later at the Hunterdon Care Center.
In addition to farming, Mr. Titus worked for decades as a bus driver and in the maintenance department at Hunterdon Central High School in Flemington.
He was a long-time member of Kirkpatrick Memorial Presbyterian Church in Ringoes, NJ.
A son, Van, died in 1999. Surviving, in addition to his wife, are his son, Randy Titus of Peyton, Colo. and a daughter, Diana Brennan, of Smith Mountain Lake, Va.; eight grandchildren, and ten great-grandchildren.
Calling hours will be held Sunday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Holcombe-Fisher Funeral Home, 147 Main Street, Flemington, NJ with a Masonic Service at 8:15 p.m. Funeral services will held at the Funeral Home on Monday at 2 p.m., followed by interment in Barber Cemetery, Delaware Township.
