Gertrude Mary Wells Shannon, age 93, died on Monday, December 5, 2022 at the Hunterdon Care Center in Flemington, New Jersey. She was a resident of HCC for the preceding five years where she enjoyed faithful and loving care.
Trudy was born in Brooklyn, New York, on June 14, 1929 to Edward and Winifred (Kelly) Wells. She was fond of saying that she was born “In the shadow of the Brooklyn Bridge.” Trudy married Thomas Joseph Shannon on November 11, 1950 and was blessed (and burdened) by five daughters, Phyllis Shannon, Laura Shannon Sgroi, Winnie Shannon, Mariane Shannon Sabo, and Celine Shannon Sullivan. Her warm memories of Brooklyn, where she married and started her family, stayed with her for the rest of her life.
Trudy enjoyed her 8 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren. She was known to fly to Dublin to see her grandson march in a parade with his school band, to serve brownies to her granddaughter for breakfast under the guise of “brown toast,” to hide in a closet and jump out as a child passed by, and to accompany her granddaughter on a trip to New York City to visit a museum.
After her marathon of child rearing, Trudy and her husband embarked on worldwide travel. She embraced new experiences. She rode an elephant, slept in a tent in Kenya, stood on an iceberg and walked on the Great Wall of China. Along with many family members and friends, she visited Ireland multiple times.
Trudy was predeceased by her husband Tom, by her son Tommy, by an infant son, Edward, and by her sister Jean Wells O'Brien.
At her request, Trudy’s body will be cremated. A private interment will be held in the spring. In lieu of flowers, mourners are requested to donate to Alzheimer’s Association, 225 N. Michigan Avenue, Floor 17, Chicago, IL 60601. or by clicking here .
Funeral arrangements and cremation services were provided by Holcombe-Fisher Funeral Home, 147 Main Street, Flemington NJ 08822. For further information or to leave an online condolence, please visit www.holcombefisher.com .
