Gertrude Marguerite Barry Ewing, age 90 years, of Raritan Township, NJ, died on Saturday, July 12, 2008 in the Rolling Hills Care Center, Clinton Township, NJ.
Born in Bridgeport, CT, November 8, 1917, daughter of the late John J. and Catherine Costello Barry, she had resided in Raritan Township since 1942.
Growing up in Madison, NJ, she graduated from Madison General High School and then went on to attain her BA from Rider College, Trenton, NJ.
She formerly worked for a local Collection Agency as well as in the Administrative Office of A & P, Newark, NJ. Additionally, she, along with her husband John, owned and operated the Ewing Farm, Raritan Township, NJ for over fifty-five years. In May of 1988, the Ewing Farm received the Century Farm Award.
A fifty plus year member of the Cherryville Baptist Church, Cherryville, NJ, Mrs. Ewing was a Bible School Teacher and a member of the Ladies Service Guild. She had numerous other volunteer activities including being a volunteer Nurses Aide at the Hunterdon Medical Center, Raritan Township, NJ; a volunteer and Nurses Aide with the American National Red Cross; a volunteer with the Hunterdon County Area Agency on Aging of which she served on numerous committees; a former Board Director and Past President of the Flemington Chapter of the AARP; a former Girl Scout Leader and 4-H Sewing Club Leader; and a participant in the American Cancer Society's Bike-a-thon. She was also a longtime member of the Flemington Woman's Club, serving as President from 1972-1974.
Her husband of fifty-three years, John S. Ewing, died in 1995.
Surviving are two daughters and sons-in-law, Peggy and Roger Cramer of Raritan Township, NJ and Gail and Greg Buchanan of Lake Kiowa, TX; a son and daughter-in-law, J. Barry and Phyllis Ewing of Franklin Township, NJ; a son, George Ewing of Centerville, NJ; eight grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
