Gertrude Zipfel, age 84 years, of Franklin Township, Hunterdon County, NJ, died on Monday, January 22, 2007 at Capital Health Systems, Helene Fuld Campus, Trenton, NJ.

Born in West New York, NJ, November 11, 1922, daughter of the late Karl and Theresa Feucht Merzena, she had resided in Franklin Township for the past thirty-five years, having previously lived in Piscataway, NJ.

Mrs. Zipfel was formerly employed at Diehl Manufacturing, Finderne, NJ and for the past twenty-five years was an Aide for the Visiting Health and Supportive Services of Hunterdon Regional Communnity Health, Flemington, NJ.

A Communicant of St. Magdalen Church, Flemington, NJ, she was a member of the Deutscher Club of Clark, Clark, NJ and also a member of its Ladies Division. A voracious reader, she also enjoyed traveling, music, gardening and nature, particulary bird watching.

A brother, Rev. Carl J. Merzena died in 2006 and a sister, Mary Phibbs, died in 2000.

Surviving are her husband with whom she celebrated fifty years of marriage in May of 2006, Erich Zipfel; a daughter, Heidi Zipfel of Flemington, NJ; a daughter, Luise Zipfel of Raritan Township, NJ; a daughter and son-in-law, Ericka and Christopher Hartsough of Raritan Township, NJ; and a brother, Joseph Merzena of Hillsborough, NJ.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be Celebrated Thursday at 10:00 a.m. in St. Magdalen Church, 105 Mine Street, Flemington, NJ under the direction of the Holcombe-Fisher Funeral Home, 147 Main Street, Flemington, NJ. Entombment will follow in St. Magdalen Mausoleum, Flemington, NJ. Calling hours will be Wednesday from 2-4 & 7-9 p.m. at the Funeral Home.
