Goldie A. Scheier, age 82 years, of Raritan Township, NJ, died Tuesday, January 17, 2017, at Hunterdon Care Center, Raritan Township, NJ.
Born in Pittstown, NJ, on February 18, 1934, on the family farm, she was the daughter of the late John and Elizabeth Jacob Hahola.
Goldie graduated from Frenchtown High School in 1952 where she was the lead in the high school's production of "Our Miss Brooks,” and performed in other school and community productions. She was a soloist in the high school choir and a vocalist for a local 1950's group the “Rhythymaires Band.” She also once auditioned for the "Ted Mack Amateur Hour.”
Goldie attended nursing school at Somerset Medical Center and earned her LPN license. She started her nursing career at Raritan Valley Hospital, Greenbrook, NJ and later was a charge nurse at Rolling Hills Care Center. She also became an assistant for physically and developmentally challenged teens at North Hunterdon High School in addition to being a private duty nurse, a camp nurse, a Nanny, and an afterschool assistant for Catholic Charities. She particularly enjoyed working with youngsters.
She raised her children in Raritan Township and her love of music and animals was a focus throughout her life, which she shared with her family and everyone she met. She also loved to write children's stories, taking photographs, and going to the beach. She found joy in cracking a joke and making others laugh and smile.
She was predeceased by sisters, Margaret Gunther, Olga Hahola, and Eleanor "Irene" Barrick; and brothers, Ernie, John, Frank, Stephen, Elmer and Edward Hahola.
Surviving are her children, a daughter, Christina Smith and husband, James of Sergeantsville, NJ; sons, Joseph, III and wife, Pamela, of Santa Paula, CA, and Carl and wife, Lisa, of Frenchtown, NJ. She is also survived by seven grandchildren, James, Jr. and Brian Smith; Joseph and Kyle Scheier; Carissa, Allison and Jessica Scheier; a great granddaughter, Scarlett Smith; a sister, Rose Pendergrass and husband, Jack, of Durham, NC; many devoted nieces and nephews, and her beloved kitties, Mischief and Sunny.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Saturday, January 21, 2017, at 10:00 AM in Our Lady of Victories Church, Baptistown, NJ. Interment will follow in Evergreen Cemetery, Clinton, NJ. Calling hours will be Friday 6:00-8:00 PM in the Holcombe-Fisher Funeral Home, 147 Main Street, Flemington, NJ.
