Grover Dilts Johnson, age 95 years, formerly of Delaware Township, NJ, passed away the morning of Wednesday, April 6, 2022, at home in Pohatcong Township, NJ.
Born in Delaware Township, NJ, November 22, 1926, he was the son of the late Howard and Violet (Housel) Johnson. He had lived in Hunterdon County, NJ for over eighty years, moving to Bethlehem Township and finally Pohatcong Township, NJ with his great-niece and caretaker, Suzie DePatto, for the last ten years.
As a young man, he graduated from the Green Sergeants one-room schoolhouse in 1941, with just two in his class. He then went to Flemington High School, graduating with an emphasis on agriculture in 1945, something he was very proud of.
Following in his father’s footsteps, he was a self-employed farmer along with his brother, Jacob Johnson, all his life. They farmed their property as well as for the surrounding neighbors. Grover was also an avid hunter and gardener. Additionally, he was the caretaker of both the Rosemont Cemetery and Lower Amwell Cemetery for over fifty years, where he and his brother opened graves and maintained the grounds. His memberships included the Sergeantsville United Methodist Church since 1945 and the Delaware Township Senior Citizens.
The last of his generation, he was predeceased by his siblings, George, Jacob, Julia, Horace, and Mary. Surviving is his great-niece and caretaker, Susan L. DePatto, of Pohatcong Township, NJ, as well as some extended family members.
Graveside services and interment will take place on Tuesday, April 12, 2022, at 11:00 AM in Lower Amwell Cemetery, 34 Sandbrook-Headquarters Road, Delaware Township, NJ under the direction of the Holcombe-Fisher Funeral Home, 147 Main Street, Flemington, NJ 08822.
