Harry L. Gano, Sr.

December 26, 1937 — December 10, 2024

Flemington, NJ

Harry L. Gano Sr., a beloved husband, father, grandfather, passed away on December 10, 2024, at the Hunterdon Care Center in Flemington, NJ, at the age of 86. Born on December 26, 1937, in Tewksbury, NJ, Harry was the son of the late Frank and Edith (Mattis) Gano and lived most of his life in the serene landscapes of Hunterdon County.

Harry devoted the majority of his career to construction and maintenance at the former Central Jersey Industrial Park in Bound Brook, NJ. He was known for his remarkable ability to repair and maintain a range of items, including cars, trucks, heavy equipment, as well as things like roofing and windows. His skills also extended to assisting in the construction of various industrial buildings there, where he earned a reputation for being a dependable and resourceful worker.

Outside of his professional life, Harry cherished the times spent at the former Flemington Speedway, where he delighted in cheering for renowned drivers such as Frankie Schneider and Billy Pauch. His love for car racing took him to tracks in Syracuse NY,  Orange County NY, Nazareth, PA, Reading PA, Langhorne PA and Harmony NJ, where he joyfully experienced the thrill of primarily dirt track races. Additionally, Harry enjoyed vacations with friends, particularly fond of trips to Atlantic City, where he could often be found playing Keno and Video Poker for hours on end.

Harry was meticulous about the care of his home, taking great pride in his pristine lawn and exterior maintenance. He had a 'devilish' sense of humor and was well-known for his playful teasing of friends and neighbors, which endeared him to many. Nevertheless, above all, Harry’s greatest love resided with his family, particularly his grandsons, Colin and Ryan, who brought him immeasurable joy.

He is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Alberta D. (Sipler) Gano of Flemington, NJ; his son and daughter-in-law, Harry and Kristi Gano of Flemington, NJ; his grandsons, Colin and Ryan Gano; and numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Harry was predeceased by his brothers William, Frank, Arthur, and Walter Gano, and his sisters Lillian Worman, Jenny Crotsley, Ethel Alpaugh, and Doris Hackman. He also mourned the loss of his infant granddaughter, Alyssa Gano in 1999.

In honor of Harry’s life, viewings will be held on December 13, 2024, from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM and again on Saturday, December 14, 2024, from 10:00 AM to 10:30 AM at Holcombe-Fisher Funeral Home, located at 147 Main St, Flemington, NJ, followed by a funeral service at 10:30 at the funeral home.  A graveside service with Military Honors will follow at 11:30 AM at Prospect Hill Cemetery, 69 Capner Street, Flemington, NJ.
