Hartwig H. Kahlke

October 5, 1926 — February 18, 2017

Hartwig H. "Hart" Kahlke, age 90, passed away peacefully on February 18th, 2017 at Bridgeway Care Center, Bridgewater, NJ. He was born in Ladelund, Germany, October 5, 1926, to the late Dr. Simon and Friederika (Ketels) Kahlke. Following World War II, he came to the United States where he worked for American Express and met his future bride, Caroline Gherzo. Hart and Caroline, his beloved wife of over 60 years, who predeceased him in 2015, lived and raised a family for over 50 years in Raritan Township following a move from Staten Island. Hart was a pension trust officer for 28 years for the Irving Trust Company in New York City. In addition to being a loving husband and father, Hart became an avid organic gardener after moving to New Jersey. Always a lover of music, he was also a member of the Hunterdon Harmonizers for several years. He enjoyed traveling and was proud of the fact that he and his wife Caroline had stayed in all 50 states and has visited several countries. Hart was predeceased by two sisters, Renate and Franziska and a brother, Gerhard. He is survived by his twin sister, Hildegard Fischer and two brothers, Winfried and Egbert Kahlke, all residing in Germany. Hart is survived by his four loving children, Bill Kahlke and his wife, Donna, of High Bridge NJ, Mary Jane Gardner (husband George, deceased) of Flemington NJ, Stephen Kahlke and his wife, Joanne of Fort Lauderdale FL, and Jim Kahlke and his wife, Lynne of Flemington NJ. He was also the loving grandfather and his survived by, John Kahlke of Brooklyn, NY, Christine Willing, her husband Ryan and Melissa Kahlke, all of Washington, D.C., and Amanda Kahlke, of Marlboro, NJ, as well as many nieces and nephews in both the US and Germany. Visitation will be on Tuesday, February 21, from 6-9 p.m. at Holcombe-Fisher Funeral Home, 147 Main Street, Flemington, NJ. Funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Cremation and interment of cremated remains will be private. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that donations be made to the Hunterdon Regional Cancer Center, 2100 Wescott Drive, Flemington, NJ, 08822.
