Helen C. Kaffitz, age 90 years, of Glen Gardner, NJ, died on Friday, September 17, 2010 at her residence.

Born in Oldwick, NJ, July 10, 1920, daughter of the late Marshall and Ruth M. Craig, she had resided in Glen Gardner since 1956.

A graduate of Douglass College with a BA in Sociology, Mrs. Kaffitz went on to receive her Nursing Degree from Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center and was a longtime Charge Nurse at Hagedorn Geriatric Center, Glen Gardner, NJ, retiring in 1982.

A United States Army veteran of World War II, Mrs. Kaffitz was a nurse with the 8th Army in the Army Nurse Corps, stationed at Brooke General Hospital at Ft. Sam Houston, TX. She was honorably discharged at the rank of Second Lieutenant.

She served on the Glen Gardner Board of Education for nine years, serving as its President for five years. Mrs. Kaffitz was also a Girl Scout Leader for many years in addition to being a longtime member of the Spruce Run Lutheran Evangelical Church, a member of the Women of the ELCA and the Tuesday Quilting Group and a former member of the Altar Guild.

Her husband, Elmer Kaffitz, died in 1984.

Surviving are two daughters and a son-in-law, Elinor Kaffitz of Glen Gardner, NJ and Elizabeth and Ralph Russo of Roanoke, VA; two grandsons, Michael Russo of Virginia Beach, VA and Patrick Russo of Blacksburg, VA; and a brother and sister-in-law, Miller and Doris Craig of Oldwick, NJ.

Memorial Services will take place on Saturday, October 30, 2010 at 11:00 a.m. in the Spruce Run Evangelical Lutheran Church, 442 West Hill Road, Glen Gardner, NJ, 08826. Private graveside services in Cherryville Cemetery, Cherryville, NJ are under the direction of the Holcombe-Fisher Funeral Home, 147 Main Street, Flemington, NJ.
