Helen Stockton Marauda went home to be with her Lord and Savior on September 25, 2012. She was the wife of the late Marcel Marauda and daughter of the late Marvin and Ida (Yorks) Stockton. Helen was affectionately known as “Nanny”, “Mom”, but most of all, “friend”.
“Born and raised in Hunterdon County” as she liked to say, Helen was born on March 22nd, 1919 in Readington Township. She went on to graduate from Kearny High School in 1938 and worked for the Dural Rubber Company as their personnel manager and then for George Zanetti & Sons, Inc. as their office manager for over twenty-five years.
Throughout her years, Helen loved and served her family, friends and community. Her lifelong motto was to “treat others as I would want to be treated.” Helen did just that by volunteering and often leading many local organizations. She was active in the Flemington VFW, President of the Ladies Auxiliary 7586 and was passionate about honoring her country and veterans by daily flying her beloved American flag. Helen was instrumental in starting the Flemington Rescue Squad, serving as their first secretary, and was in the first graduating class of nurses’ aides when the Hunterdon Medical Center opened in 1953. She also volunteered for the American Red Cross, Franklin Township PTA, and Hunterdon County Health Services. Along the way she met and made many lifelong friends, had a special gift for encouraging others and was known for her smile.
Helen was a faithful member of Amwell Church of the Brethren in Sandbrook and regularly made the trip back to Hunterdon County to visit her many friends even after moving to be closer to her daughter in Downingtown, Pennsylvania in 2002. She was especially close to the Cervenka family, owners of Cervenka Farms on Klinesville Road. Even in Pennsylvania, however, she continued to love and serve others by volunteering with Meals on Wheels and the Lord’s Pantry.
Helen was the beloved mother of two daughters, Sherie and Jane and five grandchildren. Sherie and her husband Anthony (Chip) Gazzerro and granddaughters Madeline and Emilie reside in Downingtown, Pennsylvania. Jane and her husband David and three grandchildren Samantha, Michael (Micah) and Daniel Van Camp reside in Lakeland, Florida. Helen was predeceased by her brother, Fred Stockton and his wife Betty of Flemington, NJ.
