Henry Schnakenberg, age 83 years, of Branchburg, NJ passed away peacefully at his home on Monday, December 20, 2021.
Born in Jersey City, NJ on February 26, 1938, he was the son of the late Henry and Emily Quinn Schnakenberg. He had resided in Branchburg since 2004 having previously lived in Oradell, NJ from 1968-2004 and Ridgefield, NJ as a young man.
Mr. Schnakenberg served his country in the United States Army Reserve from 1956-1964.
He graduated from the Vocational & Technical School of the County of Bergen and was a self-employed carpenter for the last sixty-five years. Henry also volunteered as a Handyman at the Somerset County Office of Volunteer Services and was the Branchburg Senior Center Treasurer for many years. Additionally, he was a long time member of the Oradell Lions Club and enjoyed volunteering as a Greeter at the Hunterdon Medical Center.
His family remembers him as a man who was always busy building or fixing something. His motto was “measure twice and cut once”. He enjoyed canoeing, bird watching, and puzzles in his later years and enjoyed attending all of his grandchildren's sporting events, tournaments, and recitals. Moreover, he always made someone smile and was able to put anyone at ease. He was known for his countless “dad jokes”, his caring nature, and his “happy-go-lucky” attitude and outlook on life. He will be missed by all who knew him.
He was predeceased by his beloved wife, Clara Schnakenberg, who passed in 2010; his daughter, June Karpowich, who passed in 2019; and his brother, John David Schnakenberg, who passed in 1987.
Surviving are three children, Jennie Quick and her husband Jim, of Branchburg, NJ, Julie Seifert and her husband Tom, of Rutherford, NJ, Tom Schnakenberg and his wife Suzanne Rodriguez, of Oradell, NJ, and his son-in-law, Jim Karpowich, of River Edge, NJ; six grandchildren, Ryan Quick, Robert Quick, Emily Quick, Jenna Karpowich, Jimmy Karpowich, and Lillian Schnakenberg as well as his companion, Nancy Cable.
A visitation will be held on Thursday, December 23, 2021, from 10:00 AM - 12 Noon in the Holcombe-Fisher Funeral Home, 147 Main Street, Flemington, NJ. A funeral service will follow at Noon in the funeral home officiated by Rev. Jack Cherry. Immediately after the service, burial will take place in Clover Hill Cemetery, 890 Amwell Road, Hillsborough, NJ.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Henry’s name may be made to the Hunterdon Healthcare Foundation, 9100 Wescott Drive, Flemington, NJ 08822.
